Young at Heart

They call us “seniors” or “older” Goldens but we think of ourselves as “experienced” with “character” and we come with great resumés. Why would you choose some greenhorn kid Golden or a “newbie” puppy still wet behind the ears? We’ve been there and done that! If you were hiring a new person, wouldn’t you want someone who is qualified? We are very qualified to be loyal friends and companions. Some call us “special” and we are looking for very special new families.

The reasons are all different for why we need new homes. Sometimes our owners got sick or too old to care for us or we got lost and couldn’t find our way back home. We can understand that. Many of us are looking for new homes because, after having lived our whole lives with one family, that family simply no longer wanted us. They got too busy or the children grew up and were no longer interested in us or they decided they’d rather have a new puppy. That we don’t understand because dogs would never be that unkind. We need someone to tell us that it was not our fault that we were made to leave the only place we have ever known – that we didn’t do anything wrong. It’s no fun being left alone!

But before we tell you all the reasons we are such perfect dogs to adopt, let’s talk about something we hear over and over. The one reason humans give that makes NO sense at all to us! We hear, “Oh, no, I don’t want an older dog because they might leave us after just a short time.” And then they say, “I don’t want my children to know what it is like to lose a pet.” Well! Did you ever hear such silly talk?

No one can know how long anything will be here! Humans and animals and flowers and everything that lives have their own times. And that is the important word – TIME! Dogs don’t count time in tomorrows; dogs count time in NOW! We don’t want to leave you. We can’t choose for that not to happen but we know it happens, even to young dogs and things we expect to have a long time. If we go and you are sad and miss us, then we know we have been with the best family ever.

As for the children, tears never hurt anyone – not for long – because tears make a heart grow. With your help, children understand – maybe better than a grown-up – that love given will always come back. And that’s why we are going to tell you an “exclusive” dog secret, but you have to promise not to tell! When you are ready we will send you another Golden to love and you will see us again in that Golden’s eyes if you look closely. What do you think of that – pretty neat, huh? It’s kind of a magic thing we do.

And so on to the all the things that should convince you to adopt us! We come in all sizes and colors of blond, gold, red and rust, and some of us have white faces. Some of us are small and some of us are big. Some are short and some have long legs but that’s the best part. You get what you see! No surprises!

We mostly all know NOT to have accidents in the house when we can get outside regularly. But if we do have an accident, we might be “adjusting” to a new schedule or maybe someone just forgot to let us out. We don’t do bad things on purpose, so please forgive us – we will do better when we learn the new rules with your help. We really do like rules – they make us feel safe.

We are quiet and like to relax wherever you are. Even though some of us might have “creaky” knees or backs and not be so good on lots of stairs, we know there is medicine from the dog doctor that will help. And even though we don’t like to wrestle or play rough, we do like to exercise! Walks with you or even swimming, which feels sooooooo good, are what we choose. Betcha didn’t know that some Golden’s are part duck? Not many people do! And after swimming, lying in the grass in the sunshine and getting a belly rub – well, it doesn’t get any better than that!

We love to learn new things, so if you take time to teach us, we will do our best. We can concentrate better than the little kids as we are not running and jumping and being wild – we can listen and pay attention. We generally all still like toys – it’s a Golden “thing” you know – and we never quite lose our love for tennis balls and toys that squeak! Unlike some of the kid dogs, we don’t chew up things that don’t belong to us – we know better. We would be SO embarrassed!

We mostly all like other dogs even if they aren’t Goldens! Some of us can share – some of us aren’t so good at that, but we’ll bet you might already have a dog that thinks the same way or even another human! Some of us get along with cats – some of us can’t stand them. We are not sure if any dog really, really likes cats, but sometimes you have to make the best of some situations!

We don’t ask for or expect much. We ask only for patience if we are a little scared. Kind words, soft touches, a comfy bed and a good dinner every day are things some of us never had or lost along the way. We are not hard to please. All we really want is to take care of you.

But we saved the best for last! There is nothing better than the kind of love we can give you! We will wait for you and be patient. We will go for rides with you, give you a shoulder to lean on and share an ice cream. We will even give you the biggest half except maybe if it is vanilla – we really love vanilla! We will never be mad if you are having a bad day – we will just understand. We will be quiet when you are thinking and smile when you are happy. We will sleep next to you all night and keep you safe and, in the morning, we will still be there. When we rest our head on your lap and look at you, then you will know you’ve made the right choice. Just remember, for however old we are, our hearts are always young. Please don’t make us wait too long. We don’t want to miss any days being with you. Is it a deal?

"Blessed is the person who has earned the love of an old dog."
