Boomer is a 10 year old male golden and Bambi is a 7 year old female golden who came into our program in January, 2006. At that time, Bambi weighed 115 pounds and was obese (sorta looked like a blowfish blown up.) She couldn’t walk… her legs weren’t strong enough to carry the weight. Bambi lost 30 pounds but she also lost her best friend, and she wasn’t the same so we arranged to put her back with Boomer who was also in fostercare. Boomer fell out of a truck when he was younger and his front leg got injured so he is lame but that doesn’t stop him from playing ball. He is obsessed with tennis balls. Their first adoption failed because the adopters didn’t have a fence they got cited by their neighborhood association for letting the dogs run loose. So, we found someone who offered to foster them TOGETHER. Soon, this family said they wanted to adopt them. Everyone was so happy. Finally, Boomer and Bambi were going to get their forever home. But on January 6th, a year from the date they came to us, we got a call from an animal shelter saying they had two of our dogs — their microchips said they were AGA dogs but no other information because the owners were negligent and never bothered to register them. We quickly searched our database and found it was Boomer and Bambi. We told the animal control officer who owned them and we were sure they must be frantic looking for them. It was then that we learned the terrible truth. The animal control officer said, “yes, I know – they called us on 12/28 and said there were two goldens in their front yard and that they didn’t belong to them and to come get them.” We couldn’t fathom this heartless and cruel act, particularly when adopters sign a contract and agree to return the adopted dog to us should they be unable to keep the dog and that under no circumstance is one of our dogs to be turned into a shelter. This was a death sentence for these two dogs. When they came back to us both dogs were in bad shape. They had been shaved and Boomer had not had his medication for his arthritis for weeks. We refused to give up on these two. Boomer and Bambi are truly a special pair and we were dedicated to finding them an equally special home. So after so many months in limbo, Boomer and Bambi’s long tough journey to finding their forever home has ended. We could not be happier to report that Boomer and Bambi’s story, although it seemed tragic at points, has a happy ending! Boomer and Bambi were adopted this past weekend by an amazing family who live on a horse farm in Florida. They are true animal lovers, and were so touched by Boomer and Bambi’s story; they knew they had to adopt them. The couple rented a van, their private plane was two small, and drove all the way up from Florida to pick up the pair. While they were meeting Boomer and Bambi mom and dad also met Max. After a little pow-wow the couple decided they had to have Max too. So a few hours later the happy family was back on the road. Boomer and Bambi and Max all set for their next adventure-forever family-hood. Boomer and Bambi already realize they have found golden heaven. They get to help mom around the house and in the horse barn and they get tons of attention and love. They also have a poodle brother and a Border collie sister, and of course Max, to run and play the days away. Perhaps Boomer and Bambi were destined to face such trial and tribulations because in the end, their forever was always meant to be the sweet and be spent together!
