Meet Finch if you can see him in this photo. The biggest problem with black dogs is you can never get a great photo of them! Finch is a 2 year old fluffy black male retriever mix who was picked up as a stray and found himself at the dog pound. His picture and emails about him were flying around because he had an injured eye and the pictures were heartbreaking! It was reported that he had been abused and hit in the face with a 2 x 4. Of course AGA stepped in to save him even though he was not ‘gold’. Like oil to Jed Clampett to us he was “black gold”. We picked him up and took him to one of our vets where he was examined. First, he was NOT hit by a 2 x 4 … there is no evidence supporting that because he has not suffered any other injuries to his head or body, just his eye. Xrays showed he had shrapnel in his eye… pieces of metal embedded in his eye and he was in great pain. Was he shot? Maybe shot at and the bullet ricocheted and hit him in the eye or something exploded near him. We will never know. But we do know he lost his sight in that eye and he was still in severe pain. We tried to save the eye but couldn’t and it had to be removed. So he has one sewed shut eye socket and one perfect other eye now. He also has the most amazing temperament – even though his eye hurt very much he never complained when he was being treated. He just wanted to put his head in someone’s lap and get petted. Well, the entire vet loved him and now with his new family he’ll have laps galore! At his first meeting with Mom and Dad, he won them over and they knew he would be a great addition to their family. Then he met Kali, his nine year old Australian cattle dog sister and the deal was done! Finch was the perfect gentleman sharing toys and treats, and Kali decided that she would be okay sharing Mom and Dad. Now the two of them are romping around together and enjoying life together. Kali doesn’t even mind that he only has one good eye – as long as he only has “eye” for her! Seems we could learn alot from our dogs…
