Orwell was a stray that was hanging out at a construction site. A very kind man saw him there and after a few days, searched us out and asked us to come get him. Orwell was in bad shape. As a full grown, purebred male golden he only weighed 36 pounds! He was emaciated, had a severe case of heartworms and a tumor in one of his testicles because he had not been neutered. We think he is around 8 or 9 years of age. He was famished and snarfed down 3 cheeseburgers today. And, as you can see from this photo, his spirit is bright. When we went to the construction site to get him, Orwell was lying down by the construction trailer and although weak, he got up and walked to us like he was saying “what took you guys so long?” Orwell had his first heartworm treatment and did well but relapsed. We decided not to continue Orwell’s heartworm treatment. His vet believes he is too much risk and may not make it through another treatment. He is in good health now and any further treatment might kill him. Through all his hardships Orwell’s foster family stood by him, giving him unconditional love. He is up to 62 pounds. His foster family reports that: “Orwell has more energy than our 4 year old golden. He loves tennis balls and must have one in his mouth at all times. He is a total velcro dog and will follow you from room to room and when you sit, he will lay at your feet. He is a cuddler – laying his head on you and not moving for hours. It is like he knows it is a special moment and he doesn’t want to spoil it. He is happiest being next to you and will find you to make sure you haven’t left him. He has no clue he is sick or what a horrible life he has had. He has a lot of quality time left but the quantity is unknown. Orwell is just a goofy guy that makes us laugh every day.” We planned to find Orwell a family to care for him for the rest of his forever but when the time came his fosters realized they could not part with Orwell. He has become a very special part of their family and the thought of giving him up was too much to bear. So Orwell’s wonderfully loving fosters have become his forevers and now Orwell is guaranteed only the very best forever and ever!
