UPDATE: Sherman got adopted and the morning after his adoption he died. We received the results of his autopsy and, Sherman died of bloat with stomach twisting. This is a not uncommon, always fatal if not immediately treated, condition that occurs with rapid onset in Goldens and other dogs with deep narrow chests. If you are unfamiliar with bloat – the signs, symptoms, causes, what you can do to prevent it and what to do if it happens to your dog, PLEASE GO TO OUR MEDICAL SECTION AND READ ABOUT IT. In honor of Sherman and in his memory, please help us educate all Golden owners, fosters and adopters so we can prevent another dog from experiencing the same fate. BACKGROUND: Meet Sherman – a happy-go-lucky 3 year old male golden retriever. Sherman was picked up in Atlanta as a stray and the shelter didn’t call us right away because they were SURE that he would be reclaimed! Sadly, he was not and we got the call. Boy are we happy for Sherman to get his second chance in life with us. When we went to pick him up, this sweet boy came bounding out of the kennel thrilled that he was being set free! Unfortunately Sherman had heartworms and needed a sponsor to pay for his medical treatment ($500). Two very special dogs, Coleman and Leo, asked their parents to help them sponsor Sherman in memory of their best friend, Elliott, who crossed the Rainbow Bridge. They are very sad but it made them feel better to help Sherman get better. Elliott was a goofy golden so what better way to pay tribute to him than to sponsor another goofy golden! Thanks Coleman and Leo. Sherman is now through his heartworm treatment and feels so much better that he is showing us his true athletic side. He is a big strong boy who is still 5 -10 pounds under weight but eating well at the training table and regaining his strength. He’ll need a fence (though he prefers to be inside with you) and no cats, and it is probably best that he be the only dog or be with submissive dogs. Sherman loves affection so if you are looking for a big teddy bear to hug, Sherman is the one!
