On National Dog Day, Meet Maverick. A Dog Who Almost Didn’t Have a Tomorrow. This is a rescue story that reminds us exactly why we do this work.
Maverick was described as a young, playful dog whose owner was a high school student struggling to keep up with him because of his school and sports schedule. We were told he was house-trained, crate-trained, good with children and other dogs, friendly to a cat, good on a leash, and a dog who enjoyed sleeping on his owner’s bed. The surrender was presented as a young dog whose family wanted him to find a more active home with children and a family who had more time to spend with him.
Nothing in that description prepared us for what we encountered.
On the day of his rescue, our transport volunteers arrived at the meeting location expecting to pick up a dog who needed a new home. Instead, they were handed a dog in a plastic travel carrier who was hours away from death.
Maverick should have weighed 60-65 lbs. He weighed just 22 lbs.
