There are a few things that will make your introduction of your new dog as successful as possible.

Outdoor

  1. As soon as you arrive with your new dog in the car, have your currents dog/s on leash in the front yard.
  2. Do not let them sniff each other yet, instead, head straight out for a walk!
  3. Walk for at least 20 minutes around your neighborhood without letting your dogs sniff each other or interact at all!
  4. After your 20 minute walk, allow your dogs to sniff each other in your front yard.
  5. Don’t rush any part of this process, the longer and slower this takes, the more successful your introduction will be.
  6. Once your dogs have spent about 10 minutes sniffing in the front yard, take them to your back yard, or a secure fenced area and drop your leashes for them to sniff, interact and hopefully play!
  7. After a few minutes, if there has been no incident and it appears they are getting along great, remove your leashes and allow them to spend some time outside burning off energy and getting to know each other.

Indoor

  1. Pick up ALL toys, bones, chewies etc… Until your dogs are best friends, any objects that could entice a fight, should be removed! This will take about a week.
  2. After about a week, introduce toys OUTSIDE, and make sure you have at least 2 per dog.
  3. To be safe, and to help your new dog adjust to his/her new home, it is best to have a crate available for them.
  4. Crate your new dog WHENEVER you cannot 100% supervise your dogs together as well as whenever you leave the house.
  5. Have multiple “Kong’s” available filled with plain yoghurt in the freezer that you can give your dog whenever he/she goes into his/her crate. They are a special tasty treat they get only in the crate and are easy to clean in the dishwasher when they are done.
  6. Feed your dogs separately!!! For AT LEAST 2 weeks! Either in another room or in the crate!
  7. Food, treats, toys and even dog beds are situations that will often elicit a fight!
